How We Refurbish Brake Calipers

Measure twice, cut once. It's the most common saying in our workshop, and every full refurbishment follows the same ten steps.

  1. Strip downYour calipers are fully dismantled.
  2. DegreaseCleaned on our degreasing machine, then air dried for inspection.
  3. InspectEvery part is checked and a parts list goes to our parts team.
  4. Confirm with youWe call to confirm the work, any extras and the final price before going further.
  5. Shot blastTaken back to bare metal, unless you ask us to keep the original finish.
  6. De-rustSteel parts soak in a de-rusting solution to remove anything left behind.
  7. CoatOur standard gunmetal coating, or the paint upgrade you've chosen.
  8. RebuildNew seals, dust boots and rubber parts fitted, and pistons replaced where needed.
  9. Pressure testTested on our rig at 800 to 2,500 psi depending on the caliper type. Some cars exceed 2,000 psi in an emergency stop.
  10. Check and dispatchQuality checked by management, packed, and sent with tracking by email and text.

Coating Options

Every full refurb comes back in our standard gunmetal grey coating. If you'd rather have a colour, add it to the same job: standard paint in red, silver, gunmetal or black, or our high-end paint in any colour code, with logos and stencils if you want them. Add painting to a refurb and the lifetime warranty covers the paint as well as the function.

Just tell us the finish you'd like on the quote form and it's priced in with the refurb.

Refurbish Your Own Calipers or Buy Exchange Units?

Most replacement calipers from garages and parts suppliers are exchange units, remanufactured by the million. At those volumes, saving £1 a caliper on cheaper seals is worth £1 million a year to the remanufacturer, which tells you where the pressure on quality sits. Your own calipers, refurbished properly, are the better part.

Brake Caliper Refurbishment FAQs

How long does a brake caliper refurb take?

Typical turnaround for a full refurbishment is 1 working day once your calipers arrive, or 2 working days with painting. Extras such as logos, thread repairs or custom pistons add time. These are typical times rather than a promise, and rare or classic parts can take longer.

Is it worth refurbishing brake calipers instead of buying new?

Usually, yes. Many new calipers from garages and parts suppliers are exchange units remanufactured in huge volumes. We refurbish your own calipers with quality parts, pressure test every one, and back full refurbishments with a lifetime function warranty. For classic and rare cars, refurbishing is often the only option.

Can you refurbish seized brake calipers?

Yes. We can free off any seized piston, however bad. If the caliper just needs to work again, our un-seize and repair service is the cheaper option.

Do I need to bring my car to you?

No. Send just the calipers. We arrange collection anywhere in the UK and ship them back when they're finished, and we work with customers worldwide by mail order.

Should I send the carriers too?

Yes, send them with your calipers. We clean and re-grease them free of charge.

Can I refurbish brake calipers myself?

We don't recommend it on a road car. Seized pistons are hard to remove without the right equipment, and the step you can't do at home is a proper pressure test. We test at 800 to 2,500 psi depending on the caliper, while most home compressors manage 60 to 100 psi, which won't reveal a poor seal until you brake hard.

What warranty do I get?

Full refurbishments come with a lifetime warranty on function, with no time or mileage limit. High-end paint is also covered for life, and standard paint for 1 year. Un-seize and repair carries a 3 month warranty. After 14 months the warranty relies on the car having been serviced, and race and track cars are not covered, though light, occasional track use of a road car is at our discretion. Read the full terms.

Why do my brakes squeak?

Usually vibration between the pads and discs, or between the pads and pistons, often in the first 1,000 miles after new pads. Use a heatproof silicone grease on the piston faces rather than copper grease, which can perish the dust boots, and bed new pads in with some firm braking. If older brakes squeak, perished piston seals are a common cause, and a refurb will cure it.
